Non-verbal COmmunication
Non-verbal communication is a form of communication that doesn't use spoken languages. Some types of non-verbal communication are:
- Handshakes
- Waving
- Smiling
- How far you stand from the person you are communicating with
As stated in the above, non-verbal communication consists of body language, facial expressions and distance from communicators. Non-verbal communication can help a conversation by giving the speaker prompts (if you understand what the other person is saying, you nod your head) to continue or not. Different cultures also have differences in non-verbal communication e.g. in Japan when greeting someone it is customary to bow and shake hands, whereas in Australia it's usually just a handshake.
Non-verbal messages allow people to:
- Reinforce or modify what is said in words
- Convey information about their emotional state
- Define or reinforce the relationship between people
- Provide feedback to the other person
- Regulate the flow of communication
